This cup box is square, with two layers, each capable of holding a small cup. It’s designed as a “sky-and-ground” structure, snapping together from top to bottom. The base of the box, a Sumeru-style pedestal, holds the box high, emphasizing the preciousness of the vessel. The box’s four sides are “opened,” allowing the contents to be clearly visible. This type of box, with holes through which one can view the interior, was known in ancient times as a “kanhe.” People often placed their prized collections in this box, placing them in a prominent position. This design allows for frequent viewing while protecting them from damage, making it an ingenious design. While many styles of “kanhe” have been handed down, a double-layered cup box is rare. The overall structure of this cup box is simple, with no elaborate carvings. This is intended to highlight the contents, avoiding overshadowing them.

“Although plain and simple, the overall proportions are well-balanced, with delicate and flowing lines. The box displays the elegant grain of golden nanmu wood throughout. Furthermore, its contoured shape, combining squares and rounds, creates a uniquely ethereal, elegant, and graceful appearance. It is truly a top-notch box.”
